Options for Large Scale Water Tanks

If you are looking for the best storage water tank for your home and you don’t know what kind of storage suits your need, we will discuss the types of containers that most people use. Choosing the right one is very complicated since there are a variety of different options available in the market today. Hopefully, we can help you make the right decision on choosing the tank that suits your needs.

Plastic

Poly or plastic water tanks are made with a round molding process. It means that the tank is limited to the size of the mold. Most of these plastic water storages is used in rural or domestic settings and can store up to 50,000 liters of water. It will be a significant disadvantage to families that consume over 100,000 liters of water per year. It means that you need to install more plastic tanks to cover your family’s yearly consumption. You know what this means? It means additional cost, more complex plumbing for the tank outlet and other maintenance costs. Plastic tanks cost will decrease as the size increases, but the cost of maintenance will increase. Poly tank production is around 60% for 20,000 to 24,000 litter tanks, but for more massive storage, people turn to steel lined tanks. The most significant advantages of plastic storage are, it does not corrode or rust, and it is very light. You don’t need heavy machinery, or additional workforce to move it to higher places, but since it is very light, you can’t put it in areas with strong wind. You can also recycle Polyethylene tanks if you don’t need them anymore. But you can’t make another tank with recycling plastics since according to clean water regulations, you can’t use recycled plastic for drinking water tanks. Plastic storage is also vulnerable to fire and can fail due to an increase in water pressure.

Older model doesn't use a tank liner, which can affect the water's taste due to the concentration of zinc at the bottom of the tank. Galvanizing is the process of applying metal to another metal and galvanized tanks are made from zinc applied to steel. The good thing with galvanized steel is it corrode, and you need to use the rust-resistant coating. It is essential to make sure not to damage the layer when cleaning the tank. Aquaplate Steel with plastic coating uses a food-grade polymer bonded to a galvanized steel, instead of a liner. It comes in a 30,000-litter size. These plastic-coated steels are not resistant to prolonged exposure to sunlight, so make sure to cover the top of the tank at all times. The plastic coating should not be damaged during installment, manufacture or tank cleaning. If the coating is damaged, immediately repair using sealants to prevent rust or corrosion of the galvanized steel. Chemicals used as protection to mosquitos can also destroy the plastic coating just like poly and PVC tanks. Stainless Steel Stainless steel water tanks are usually found in industrial settings like dairy processing plants, beverage plants or food processing plants. It can also be used as a water tank for domestic homes because it does not suffer from rust or corrosion. The problem is, stainless steel tanks are a lot more expensive compared to plastic or galvanized steel tanks. It varies in quality, size, and price and it requires a seam where stainless sheets are joined. Stainless steel tanks are corrosion resistant, but the solder in the seams or the rivet and screws are not. Iron deposits at the bottom of the container can cause rust and corrosion and can affect the quality of the liquid inside the tank. Concrete Concrete water storage tanks, as well as Ferro-cement, are cumbersome and difficult to maintain. Many rural and domestic areas stopped using this kind of tanks, but for people that are still using this, they opt to install it underground. You need to line the concrete storage with sealant because unlined water tanks cause water to taste bad and leach lime, increasing the pH level of the water. The most common problems with concrete tanks are leaking and cracking. Since most of it is underground, most leaks and cracks go undetected for many years if not properly maintained.
